Strawberry: Wood Stawberry

We all know and love this one, though you will rarely find it with decent fruit. I haven't found one with fruit since childhood. Generally, they reproduce asexually and, when they do produce good fruit, you would need to be on the spot to beat the many other forest visitors who want a taste. The slight hairy, near sessile (attached at the base) leaves, mark this as a Wood Strawberry (fragaria vesca, sometimes further classified as fragaria vesca ssp. californica and, on occasion, as fragaria californica; Botti simply goes with fragaria vesca). It's cousin the Mountain Strawberry (fragaria virginiana) has petioled leaves (on stems that is) without hairs on the upper surface.
