Pincushion Beardtongue
I think this is the Pincushion Beardtongue (penstemon procerus formosus). It is very close to Rydberg's Penstemon (penstemon rydbergii). According to Botti, the ranges barely overlap, but both are present in Lyell Canyon, where this photo was taken. Botti says that P. procerus is more blue/purple and that it grows in abundance right next to the Lyell Canyon trail, where this photo was taken, whereas the P. rydbergii is known more from its populations on the other side of the canyon (east side). The leaves on this species are mostly basal, whereas P. rydbergii has basal and stem leaves. Cant' really see the base in this photo, but the leaves are sparse on the stem. Anyway, the ID is real uncertain here.
