We have also hiked to the slopes above Obelisk Lake by going south around Starr King and then cross country on the open terrain on the ridges that lead toward Quartzite Peak, but we didn't quite make it (basically one ridge before Obelisk). Nice hike that I'll get around to descrinbing some day.
