Outdoor Gear for Kids at RockyMountainKid.com
Kristy, who used to live and work in Yosemite has moved on and has started Rocky Mountain Kid, selling outdoor clothing for kids. She's trying to make a go of it while raising Cadence. If you want to help out a genuine individual who definitely will value your business, at least think about taking a moment to compare prices between the big onlin retailers and Rocky Mountain Kid.
Here's what Kristy has to say about her journey from Yosemite bum to entrepeneur:
In 2003 Kristy Jahn-Smith came to spend the summer in Yosemite, but it wasn't until 5 years later that she left. Smith says "It was the natural beauty and all the outdoor activities that kept me there". Getting married to husband Robb, a long time Yosemite resident, also had a little something to do with staying in the park. She and her husband met while working at the Ahwahnee Hotel. "We were actually married by one of our co-workers, at the top of Vernal Falls, with some hikers we met up top as our witnesses". Smith enjoyed a few summers cooking in the High Camps and working at the Ahwahnee Hotel during her time in Yosemite. In early 2007 Kristy and Robb welcomed baby Cadence to the family. Cadence spent 6 days living in Yosemite Valley before the whole family relocated to Canada. Smith says that leaving a place like Yosemite was not easy to do "We left a lot of good friends behind, but it's nice to go back to visit and have so many people there excited to see us. I also really miss having adventure on our door step. I can no longer start a hike or a trail run right out the door. These days we have to hop in the car and drive somewhere or walk next to traffic for 30 minutes before getting to the river bottom."
The family now lives in Lethbridge, Alberta, which is in the foothills of the nearby Rocky Mountains. Within a 4 hour driving radius are half a dozen National Parks. In September of this year, Smith launched RockyMountainKid.com, a website that caters to active and outdoor loving kids. "I was inspired to do this because it combines two of my loves, outdoor adventure and kids. Getting into business for oneself is not an easy thing to do, but so far I am enjoying the challenge and I look forward to watching the business grow."
The online store features products from great names like Merrell, Patagonia, Julbo, Molehill Mountain Equipment, Yogini, iPlay, Hatley and more. Smith says RockyMountainKid.com is an eclectic mix of yoga wear for kids, tough technical clothing for the elements and fun accessories.
