Whiteheaded Woodpecker in Mariposa Grove

The White-headed Woodpecker (Picoides albolarvatus) is the bane of homeowners in the Yosemite area (along with the Red-Breasted Nuthatch and the the Flicker). A fine connoisseur of wood siding, this guy can cause incredible damage as it builds a comfortably sized nest in your home.

These guys nest in my neighbor's log house every year, but they can be hard to photograph because they like to stick to the shade. Their black and white coloration ultimately gives them excellent camouflage while flitting about in dense forest.
