In most years there is a wonderful display right by the road at Summit Meadow on the Glacier Point Road. Camas has a wide variety of pollinators and is a favorite of wasps. The plant is toxic, but with proper preparation edible and was an important foodstuff for the peoples west of the Mississippi. When Lewis and Clark ventured into those lands, the Nez Perce showed them how to make Camas Cakes which were an important supplement to their foodstuffs. Camassia leichtlinii ssp suksdorfii was previously known as C. quamash ssp. quamash (and is so called in Botti) and it hybridizes easily with C. quamash, but is now considered a subspecies of C. leichtlinii.
