Growing often, but not exclusively, near water, the Western Azalea (Rhododendron occidentale) puts on a show for the senses. Growing densely, the large flowers with their long pistils dress up many creeks, ponds and trails. But if you were walking in the dark, you still might notice a stand of azalea from the sweet smell, which attracts insects in abundance. One sense that that azalea does not please: its powerful glycosides can kill an animal that eats too much.
