Badger Powder (Feb. 16-22 2006)

Winter finally came to the Sierra this spring (or almost spring). It's been the best snow of the year by far and as good as anyting I remember from last season's epic storms.

Spring weather wakes up the bears (Feb 9-15, 2006)

People insist on telling me that the bears are not active at high elevations in the winter and sometimes the ranger naturalists are even surprised when I say I saw bear tracks, but during this rece

Shocking behavior by US soldiers in Yosemite

I've been working a lot lately and also preparing photos for some galleries and haven't posted much Yosemite News lately, but there have been some newsworthy items.

Snowy Valley and Pouncing Coyote (Jan 19-25, 2006)

Chains required indeed! Snow everywhere and coyotes enjoying the sun and crust on the snow, allowing them to walk on top, listen to who's scurrying about below, and find a good lunch.

Too much work and too much shoveling to take any decent pictures, but we did get a couple of good snowstorms through this week to refresh the tired trails.

A Rainy Week (Dec 22-28, 2005)

The Yosemite News of the Week is pretty much summed up by this picture of people at Lower Yosemite Falls in the rain with their "Yosemite" ponchos, purchased at the Lodge store and the plastic bags

Badger Pass Downhill Area Opening Tomorrow (Dec 27, 2005)

We didn't get near the 28" of snow that they were forecasting.  Rather than snowing hard all day today, it has actually been mostly a blue-sky day.  There was enough snow, though, for the Park Serv

Badger Cross-Country is Open (Dec 25, 2005)

So far most storms rolling through Yosemite this year have been warm, with snow levels above 8000' which has been bad news for skiers (especially those of us with new skis in the attic).  However, the road is open to Badger Pass, the coverage is not too bad on Glacier Point Road, and the Cross-Country Ski School is open (they took a group out to the Glacier Point Ski Hut this morning).

Half Dome from Glacier Point (Dec 15-21, 2005)

It has not been very wintry and, despite recent storms, there's probably less snow now that in this picture.  Badger Pass was scheduled to open on December 23, but even that's iffy, though there is

Frosty Meadow (Dec 1-7, 2005)

There's been some beautiful frost on the meadows lately.  Cold nights (and days!) with humid but clear weather has made for some gorgeous hoar frost.

Foggy Tree in Ahwahnee Meadow (Dec 8-14, 2005)

This is the same tree in Yosemite Valley that I fell out of while taking last week's photo of Half Dome above the Ahwanhee Meadow. This is only the following day, but the mood is quite different.
