Shooting Stars of any species are one of the real treats of the spring meadows. They are shooting stars because after pollination, they turnand point to the sky! I have way better pictures than these, but these are the ones I could lay my fingers (er.. mouse) on right away.
The Henderson's Shoot Star (Dodecatheon hendersonii), also known as Mosquito Bills and Sailors Caps grows in the park, but is in greatest abundance down in El Portal, though it does range as high as 1700m. It hybridizes with Dodecatheon clevelandii (distinguished by it's green stem and narrower leaves). The two overlap between the low range of D. hendersonii (500m) and the upper range of D. clevelandii (600m).
